When the weather is hot seniors may not want to be very active. But if the hot weather lasts your senior parent can’t just sit around and do nothing. There are some activities that seniors can do comfortably at home even if it’s blazing hot outside.
If your senior parent has in-home care, their in-home care provider can help them with some of the activities, like chair exercises that are designed to be gentle. And the in-home care provider can also do things like play games or cards with them to keep your senior parent from getting bored.
Puzzles and Games
Engaging activities that stimulate the mind, such as jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles, Sudoku, or board games are perfect for seniors during hot weather. These activities can be both enjoyable and beneficial for cognitive health. And they can be done indoors where the air is cool. Make sure your senior mom or dad has plenty of word game books and puzzles to help them get through the summer.
Arts and Crafts
Your mom or dad can indulge their creativity with arts and crafts projects. This could include painting, drawing, knitting, crocheting, scrapbooking, or even trying out new DIY projects. Ask your mom to make you a scrapbook of family photos. Or, ask your dad to paint you a new piece of art for your wall. The summer is a great time for seniors to try new arts and crafts that they have always wanted to learn.
Reading and Audiobooks:
Reading a good book or listening to audiobooks can be a relaxing and enjoyable way to pass the time. Create a cosy reading nook with comfortable seating and good lighting in a cool spot in the house and your mom or dad can curl up with a book or headphones and enjoy a great storey. Audiobooks can be downloaded onto their phone or tablet, or they can listen to an audiobook with a voice assistant.
Exercise and Stretching
Seniors can stay active with indoor exercises like chair yoga, stretching routines, or chair muscle-building exercises. There are many exercise videos available online that are tailored for seniors and can be done in the comfort of their home. YouTube, streaming apps, and other platforms are full of exercise ideas for seniors that are gentle enough to be done on hot days.
Video Games
Video games are a fun way for seniors to spend a hot afternoon. They can immerse themselves in a storey, a mystery to be solved, or in a fantasy world where they have to solve puzzles. Video games also give seniors the chance to play with other players in real time and talk to their friends throughout the day.
Video games aren’t just fun for seniors though. They can help seniors improve their manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and problem solving skills.
